Lacombe ranked in Top 20 Places to Live in Canada

For the second year in a row, Lacombe has made it to the list of top 20 places to live in Canada. We have been ranked as the 17th best place to live overall, and the fourth best small community in which to live in Canada by MoneySense, Canada’s leading personal finance magazine and personal finance website.

MoneySense surveyed 201 communities across Canada, looking to identify the best places to live in the country based on affordability, access to medical care, low crime, good public transportation, and nice weather. In total 34 different factors are considered in evaluating the top places to live in Canada.

“This year marks the second year in a row that Lacombe has been in the top 25 places to live,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “While we try not to read too much into statistics, one thing is clear; Lacombe is a well-balanced and safe community with strengths in multiple areas.”

Alberta’s newest city, Lacombe is maintaining steady growth, thanks in part to a strong local economy, low taxes, and a vibrant cultural scene. As well, the municipality’s focus on proactive planning to enhance programs and services has resulted in the creation of an innovative regional public transit service, scheduled to commence in September 2014.

“We recognize that convenient public transit is a growing need within our community, and we are working with our regional partners to facilitate this service,” said Chief Administrative Officer Norma MacQuarrie. “This new service will not only connect the communities of Lacombe, Blackfalds and Red Deer; it will make it easier to get around within the city.”

“We’ve always had a stable economic sector with federal and provincial government employers, educational institutions, and a mix of industrial and agricultural businesses,” said Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe. “In the 2013 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, residents told us clearly that retail development is a top priority, so we are currently developing strategies and working with industry partners to bring retailers to Lacombe.”

“This approach is exemplified by Council’s recent decision to relocate the new police facility to accommodate a hotel on Highway 12 adjacent to Michener Park,” said Mayor Steve Christie.

“Lacombe is a safe community as evidenced by the five-year crime trending data, which indicates both property and violent crimes are on the decline from what were already enviably low compared to other communities,” said Lacombe Police Chief Steve Murray. “The City’s ongoing commitment to residents’ safety and security is demonstrated by its investment in a new police facility, as well as our ongoing focus on policing that is rooted in community partnership.”

The magazine uses information on Census Metropolitan Areas and Census Agglomeration areas as defined by Statistic Canada, weighing and ranking 201 cities and towns nationwide by various categories.
